My 1st grade daughter explained to me her meaning of "Martin Luther King Jr." day. She was so fascinated of his beliefs and boldness and yet horrified of his tragic death. She asked "Why?" a lot. Of course, I had to explain to her how things were "back then." Still a lot of "Why's?"
I believe this holiday means more to the american people than ever before. In a couple of days we'll see our new president sworn in. Something we as americans know happens every 8 years. But it's different. It's completely different. Is he a man? Yes. Is he a great thinker and can he help this country? Yes. Is he the normal, typical, traditional caucasian male that will lift his right arm and promise to serve this country? No. That he is not. President Elect Obama will forever go down in our history books as a man of CHANGE. The first black president. The efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. paid off decades later and will continue.
I'm sure Obama has thought about this day differently than before. All america should look at this day different than before. As we as believers and lovers of Jesus pray for our new leader, let us not forget, "All things are possible."
I believe Martin Luther King Jr. was the FIRST to say, "Yes, we can!"
